Hints and Tips on Skills

first aid

The best place to practice first aid is at Gulatti's in Padorn. You will find a spin wheel and a needle in an adjacent room. Touching the needle will cause you to bleed for a short time. Enough to practice your first aid skill.

haggle

The haggle skill allows you to strike deals with shopkeepers, selling for more and paying less for things you buy. It cannot be learned in any school and is purely learned and trained by doing.
In order to get a feeling how much the items you plan to sell are worth in total, just offer them, without asking a price for them, e.g. 'offer armours'. That will prompt the shopkeeper to make you an offer for all the items you carry and are offering to him for buying. Now, that you got an estimate, start haggling by offering him the same items, this time asking for a price that is above his proposal, e.g. 'offer armours for 1 pc 4 gc'. The coin types are abreviated, so you use pc, gc, sc and cc for plats, gold coins, silvers and coppers. The shopkeeper will then either accept your proposal or disagree. If he accepts, try to haggle for even more. If he disagrees, try for a little less. Don't try to cheat him too much though. He gets angry if you ask way too much and might even refuse to haggle with you anymore. The more often he disagrees, the angrier he gets. When you reached a price that both of you can agree on, you close the deal with 'barter' and the items and coins change owners.

swim

The best place to train swimming is the lake in Atlantis. The main reason being that there is basically no chance of drowning there, unlike other places like Lake Mandathul or the crystal river. I personally prefer to train swimming by going there naked, with loads of rocks in my inventory. The rocks can be either mined yourself, or ask a friendly dwarf for some rocks with worthless content.
Load yourself with as many rocks as you can carry, enter the lake and try swimming. As you won't manage, drop them all. Wait untill you have recovered from your failed attempt, then dive after the rocks. And start over. You can measure your progress not only by the rising skill, but also by the number of rocks can carry along swimming.
As alternative, use armours you plan on selling, such as platemails from giants or chainmails from pirates.

throwing

The throwing skill can be completely learned without ever spending a single copper coin at one of the training schools. Simply throw items, preferably weapons, at your opponents in a fight.

trading

The trading skill can be learned by studying the different books on trading which are at sale at the outfitter in Stone Mountains. To gain the optimum skill knowledge, one should start reading the smallest and cheapest book first and work ones way up through the books. In the end, one might have to purchase a second tome of trading, the largest book, in order to maximize the skill. The books will lose some of their power while reading them, due to usage, but they still make a great gift to newbies.
